Xbox to release recycled gamertags

gamertags xboxAre you in the market for a new gamertag on Xbox this summer? Well we have some good news for you, xxxEliteSniper420xxx. This Wednesday, Microsoft are releasing nearly 1 million gamertags into the wild. Gamertags that have not been active for a number of years, meaning you can snatch one up.

“These Gamertags are from accounts abandoned from the original Xbox era, the same source of Gamertags we used in our 2011 release. These accounts never migrated to Xbox 360 and as a result they have been inactive for quite some time,” Major Nelson announced on his blog.

Of course you’ll have to pay to change your existing gamertag, unless you’re looking to join Xbox Live for the first time. But, it’s good news for those who desire a particular gamertag on Xbox and may not have been able to acquire it.

Gamertags

A listing of available tags is not possible, according to Microsoft, but they include such names from the following categories:

  • Proper Names
  • Pop culture references (Entertainment, sports, gaming)
  • Types of Food
  • Geography and Travel
  • Science and Technology
  • Math and Numbers
  • Animals
  • Some of the greatest inventions of all time

It is also worth pointing out that changing your Gamertag won’t impact your Gamerscore, Achievements, or your Friends list.
