Will Ferrell to star in esports comedy

will ferrellWill Ferrell is one of those actors you either love or hate. Some of his movies are a bit hit and miss, but when they hit, they are classics. Blades of Glory, Step Brothers and even Anchorman are up there. Yesterday, it was announced that his next film will see him take on the world in esports!

According to Variety, “Ferrell will star as a member of a professional eSports team. In the film he is an anomaly in a sport where players usually retire in their 20s due to slowing hand-eye coordination. Evil Geniuses and Fnatic, two of the premiere real-life eSports teams in the world, are in discussions to have a presence in the film.”

Gary Sanchez and Mosaic will produce based on a script by Michael Kvamme and Jordan Dunn. Patrick Connelly and John Beach of Gravity Squared are co-producing. It will be distributed by Universal Pictures.

Esports continues to grow annually and while seen by some as anything but ‘athletic’, teams of players travel the world playing professional competitions in some of your favourite games such as Call of Duty, Rocket League, League of Legends and Counter Strike.

Hopefully the film will be insightful as well as providing humour that won’t feel stale or cringe-worthy. If it is aimed towards gamers, it could be fun, but if it is made to take the piss out of them, then it may not be received so well.
