Yesterday, we got our first official look at Watch Dogs 2 from Ubisoft. Set in San Francisco, it has a more hipster vibe to it, actual dogs, and a lot more colour. In saying that, the original title in 2014 divided fans, with a sense of overwhelming dislike and disappointment from the masses, but can Ubisoft win the players over and make amends?
“Set in the birthplace of the tech revolution, the San Francisco Bay Area, Watch Dogs 2 explores a new reality where an interconnected city and network of personal devices are used to control and manipulate citizens on a unprecedented scale. Step into the shoes of a brilliant hacker, Marcus Holloway, and hack everything on your way to shutting down the establishment behind this massive corruption.”
The trailer gives me a bit of a weird vibe. I’m imagining a bunch of tech savvy kids who are upset with things such as not being allowed attend spring break, daddy won’t buy them their first car, or ‘my boss is an asshat, let’s screw over the office servers’. I don’t want to be negative about it, I shouldn’t be, but I’m a gamer like everyone else, and one who was a bit disappointed with the first Watch Dogs.
“Explore a massive and dynamic open world offering an incredible variety of gameplay possibilities. Hack your way through traffic while you engage in dangerous car chases through the winding streets of San Francisco, traverse the rooftops of the colorful and vibrant neighborhoods of Oakland, and infiltrate the cutting-edge offices of Silicon Valley companies. There are many secrets to uncover in the birthplace of the tech revolution.”
Watch Dogs 2 will also feature co-op alongside friends, as well as adversarial modes, probably including stuff we already witnessed in the first game. The idea of traversing on rooftops as well as on foot or in transit is pretty cool too, but until the game is seen in action, a majority of players are going to remain pessimistic until they see final release gameplay. After all, it was Watch Dogs in 2014 that screwed players over on all platforms with its visual downgrade.
Watch Dogs 2 has a release date of November 15th, generally reserved for Assassin’s Creed which will be absent this year.
