Warner Bros. announces Gauntlet for PS4

GauntletLast year Arrowhead Studios released a brand new take on the retro classic, Gauntlet, on PC. Today the game’s publisher, Warner Bros. Interactive announced that a special ‘Slayer’ edition of the game will be coming to PlayStation 4 on August 11th and it is now available to pre-order on the PlayStation store for £15.99.

The original game released 30 years ago, back in October 1985 and earned a well-deserved place in gaming history. Why? Well Gauntlet was one of the first ever multi-player dungeon crawlers to grace the arcade scene. Players had the choice of four different characters each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. There was the Warrior who dealt the highest damage, the Wizard who boasted the best magic, the Valkyrie with exceptional armour and the fast moving Elf. In its first year it proved a huge money maker for arcades across the world but it slowly disappeared from the gaming scene and never returned until Arrowhead released their updated version last year.

Now the Warrior, Wizard, Valkyrie and Elf are preparing to make the jump to PS4. The ‘Slayer’ Edition is slightly different to Gauntlet on Windows as players look set to “players will travel to an unexplored realm and encounter new hero weapons and abilities, new monster types, additional features that increase team dynamics and strategy, and new gameplay modes”. Of course this isn’t 1985 anymore and gaming has changed a lot so naturally the game has special pre-order bonuses. Pre-ordering will net you download codes for ‘Mordok’s Screaming Hammer’ and the ‘Reaper’s Visage Helm’ for the Warrior. Although at least we no longer have to pay for every turn like we did 30 years ago.

You can check out the trailer for the PS4 edition below and fans of the original will likely get a warm fuzzy feeling of nostalgia (or rage) as the food gets destroyed.
