The developer version of the Vive was made available in May for free shortly after GDC 2015, and received over 10,000 requests for the kit.
“Later this year, HTC will offer the first commercial Vive units via a limited quantity of community and developer systems, with larger quantities shipping in calendar Q1 2016.”
We don’t know how many units this “limited release” will have, but no doubt there will be a high demand so if you want in, you will likely have to pay a little more and order it as soon as it is available.
The Vive’s competitors, Sony’s Morpheus and the Oculus Rift, are also expected to launch in early 2016 meaning there should be plenty of choice when it comes to the VR market around the same time. That said, it is also likely to be the most expensive.
Valve have also confirmed that there is at least 80 games in development for the Vive, and that number will increase as the release date for these VR headsets come closer and closer.
What are your thoughts? Which VR Headset are you most looking forward to? Will you be waiting until the later models? Or are you a non-believer and think that these are a gimmick that will die out in a few years? Let us know in the comments!
