We should have seen this coming. Tim Schafer hasn’t handled money well in the past. Hell, Double Fine even poke fun at it in their YouTube videos from time to time. But I think that dedicated fans often shove their doubts aside, and assume the best in people.
This is the man that Brought us Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, and Psychonauts. We love those games, and we put our faith in him. *sighs* Fool me once…
Tim made the announcement this morning via twitter:
This is absolutely mind-boggling. The Psychonauts 2 campaign on FIG (Double Fine’s new crowdfunding platform), raised almost 4 million dollars, that’s not including the money from investors and Double Fine Productions. How can TWENTY FIVE PERCENT OF THE BUDGET have been spent already?!
I’ve often defended Tim Schafer in the past, out of love and respect for his work. I even wrote an article on Day of the Tentacle Remastered last week, which simultaneously served as a giant promotion of Double Fine’s YouTube page, due to my admiration for their Behind-The-Scenes content. But as of today, I have completely had it with this sort of nonsense. I mean, c’mon — this is just plain ridiculous.
We’ll cover more of the story as it unfolds in the days to come.
