Ubisoft’s The Crew originally launched over a year ago on December 2nd 2014 and right from the off disappointed a lot of those who anticipated it, we know we were one of them. Since then, Ubisoft have gone back to the drawing board and released a huge update, completely overhauling the gameplay and graphics. But is it enough to win the hearts of those it let down during its first year?
Believe it or not, I’m actually a fan of the Assassin’s Creed series and have been so since the very first game, which was in no way amazing, but proved the concept was something worth looking into. I’ve played every game in the main series, bar the infamous Unity for obvious reasons which I doubt anyone can argue against me with. Assassin’s Creed 2 was almost exactly what I wanted to see from the series, and in my eyes the best. However my personal favourite is Black Flag, because it’s only Assassin’s Creed in name and a few plot points, instead opting to be the best Pirates of the Caribbean game ever made.
So you now know where I stand with the series before getting into this review. It’s clear that the yearly releases is putting an unnecessary strain on the series, but Ubisoft have serious amount of resources to get it done. I didn’t mind that they removed ship combat (the best addition to the series), because the setting didn’t require it, and I hoped they would put those additional resources to good use, with a competent story, strong characters and challenging gameplay. But I was disappointed.
According to a post in the Ubisoft Forums for Siege, due to issues with matchmaking times and disconnections on all platforms, the team felt it best to push the open beta back until the problems are sorted.
Ubisoft have rebranded their ‘Uplay’ members platform as ‘Ubisoft Club’ this week. The feature has been a part of console games since the last generation, and a nightmare for pc gamers at times, acting as DRM protection, to cut out piracy in their games.
