Last week a report from Deadline claimed that Daisy Ridley was being considered to play Lara Croft in a new film adaptation of the Tomb Raider franchise. Last night at the Empire Awards, Ridley confirmed that there “have been conversations” about the part, but clarified that nothing is set in stone yet.
The young actress said that she was “waiting for someone to say ‘I want you, let’s do it’.” So it sounds like she’s eager to play the part. Ridley also added that there wasn’t a script for the film yet.
Ridley is currently filming Star Wars Episode VIII with director Rian Johnson, but she made it clear that her Star Wars commitments won’t be a problem, saying “I’m trying to fill up my calendar.”
Star Wars actor John Boyega had the following to say:
“I played Tomb Raider the game, it’s a new take and I think the movies are going to be based on that version, but I texted Daisy [and] was like, ‘this is you!’ and ‘you need to get on that because you could be Lara Croft.’ She should be.”
The new Tomb Raider film will be directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug, who has been a fan of the franchise since the first game.
The director has said that he’s “always been a fan of strong female characters and I think I’ve had strong female characters in all my previous movies, so that’s something I thought was interesting. I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well. I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I’m hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise.”
A lot of writers have been involved with the project over the years, including Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man). Reports indicate that a script was written by Evan Daugherty (Snow White and The Huntsman, Divergent, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), but he is no longer involved with the project. Daugherty’s script is now being rewritten by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Transformers 5).
The reboot will be based on the last two Tomb Raider games and “will feature a younger Lara Croft going on her first adventure.”
