Spielberg’s Ready Player One delayed due to Star Wars

ready player oneA couple of weeks ago Disney announced that they were pushing back the release date of Star Wars Episode VIII from May 26th 2017 to December 15th 2017.

This would mean that Episode VIII would open on the same day as Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, an adaptation of Ernest Cline’s popular sci-fi novel.

Unfortunately, in the wake of this news reports have surfaced indicating that Ready Player One will now be released on March 30th 2018.

Warner Bros., the distributor of Ready Player One, aren’t willing to take on Disney’s box office juggernaut even if they have Steven Spielberg by their side. The latest ‘Star Wars’ film, The Force Awakens, is currently sitting on 2 billion dollars in revenue worldwide.

Ready Player One is set in “a virtual world called Oasis, in which a teenager finds himself competing in a treasure hunt against ruthless foes after the game’s founder dies and offers his fortune as the grand prize.” The story incorporates a healthy amount of pop culture references to the 80’s and 90’s, which served as inspiration for the book’s author.

Spielberg fans won’t have to wait too long in the meantime though, as his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s ‘The BFG’ is set to be released this July.
