The truth of the story is actually a lot less controversial. You may remember the story from just a few days ago, when we posted that Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage had in fact been dropped as the voice of ‘Ghost’ from Bungie’s Destiny. Back then, the rumour was that fans were unsatisfied with his performance, relating it to the liking of “someone telling a child a bedtime story”. The story sparked somewhat of a response from you, the 4-One Gaming community in a fashion that genuinely moved myself as the author. Since then, executive producer Mark Noseworthy has spoken out during an interview with Game Informer stating the real reason for Dinklage’s, who has since been replaced by voice actor Nolan North, absence from future Destiny expansions.
Noseworthy: “It’s more on the nonsense side of things, Dinklage was awesome to work with but we needed to work with someone who is more available. Nolan is a pro, this is his thing. You can just call him up and say ‘hey, next week we’re doing this internal play test and it would be great to get some Ghost dialogue in there’. And he’s available.”
The Taken King expansion is just around the corner, which will see Ghost play an overall more vital role in the game’s story, one of the main complaints from the Destiny community has been based around the delivery of Destiny’s plot, and that’s something Bungie have really been focusing on in the new expansion. In fact, the whole of Destiny, is more or less undergoing a total re-vamp, previous missions are being re-designed and re-organized to help better the experience. Quest lines are going to become more specific, including previous quests from the original content.
“The questification of the Year One content, aligning it with the player experience in The Taken King, reveals some things which were, I think, a little scary to Bungie of a year ago, it does reveal the RPG nature of the game.”
With that in mind, it’s easy to see how Bungie made the decision to replace Dinklage with someone who can be a lot more dedicated. Dinklage has starred in several roles of recent which have likely conflicted with the desires of the Destiny development team, given they’re now working hard to win back the support of the community and make Destiny an overall better experience for the gamers. Having a more dedicated actor in the place of Dinklage will likely help the characters feel a more integral part of the game and while the decision may have seemed somewhat unfair at first. We’re sure it was made with integrity along with the very best of intentions.
