With Shenmue 3 successfully crowd-funded and due for release some time in this or the next decade, it looks like Sega may be furthering their interest in bringing back the original two Shenmue titles in remastered form.
While previous discussions were mentioned as far back as last May, bringing them onto current generation consoles isn’t as easy as they would like it to be.
Community Manager Dan Sheridan said last year that “Sadly, it’s not as simple as porting the games to the current platforms, as we would need to ensure that any HD remaster lives up to the quality of the original titles. And with games as immersive as Shenmue 1 and 2, there are further complications from licensed products that were included in the original games. That said, we’d love to do it, and are currently investigating how to make it a reality.”
Now, according to Gematsu, Sega have registered domains for ShenmueHD.com and ShenmueRemastered.com, visible via WhoIs. You can see an example in the image below.
My own personal experience with Shenmue ended with a fight scene similar to that of Virtua Fighter if memory serves me well, which then asked me to insert disc two. I didn’t have disc two, so couldn’t progress in the title. Maybe in the future I will finally see what happens next, but for now, Shenmue Remastered is the first hinted at remastered title of 2017. That’s some pub trivia right there, isn’t it?
