Jason Blundell of Treyarch told Eurogamer that from the get go, Call of Duty Black Ops 3 players can play any mission in the campaign right from the main menu. There’s no need to start from the beginning and work your way through, you can play the climactic finale first, if you want.
“It gives them the flexibility to consume the content how they want,” Blundell said. “The unlocking level system is an archaic mentality we’ve had since we did bedroom development back in the day – you do this, then go on to the next one.
“Consumers and game players in general are far more mature these days. There are so many things vying for our interests today. It’s about, how do they want to consume it? Maybe they put it down on level two, and then they’re in work the next day, and some guy says, ‘dude, you’ve got to check out level four!’ And he’s like, ‘okay, I’ll have a quick look.’ That’s totally fine. I think it’s their choice.”
It’s an interesting decision, considering you could see the ending before you even know who what your character’s name is. To put it into context, imagine playing the last mission of a Mass Effect game before meeting your crew members. A bit odd, but whether it’s what fans want in Black Ops 3, who knows? Will you be sticking to tradition, or spoiling the story for yourself on launch day?
