Publisher Nordic Games today revealed a new open world RPG project developed by the creators of Risen and Gothic, Piranha Bytes, currently called ELEX, which stands for “eclectic, lavish, exhilarating, xenial”. Ooo, fancy. Doubt that will be the name by the end of it though, as that name makes it sound like it’s a little up its own arse.
This project is the first collaboration between the two companies, with Piranha Bytes previously working with Deep Silver who published the Risen series, including Risen 3: Titan Lords Enhanced Edition releasing on PS4 in August.
ELEX is described as an “edgy, dark, uncompromising” and “complex” RPG, set in a “post-apocalyptic science fantasy universe,” according to the press release by Nordic Games. It “puts players into a huge, seamless game world full of original characters, mutated creatures, deep moral choices and powerful action.”
Sounds like a cross between Fallout and The Witcher going by that description, but we will have to wait and see.
“It is great to know, that we will have ample creative freedom with ELEX, which is a very important factor for us,” said Björn Pankratz, Piranha Bytes’ game director. “We can’t wait to show you a completely new game experience with a fresh setting, new assets and plenty of possibilities.”
This is “by far the most ambitious project for Piranha Bytes and Nordic Games to date.”
ELEX is currently in development for PC and current gen consoles, and is expected to release winter next year, so either late 2016 or early 2017. Attendees at Gamescom can get the first look at a “vertical slice” of the game, so look forward to hearing more then.
The Risen series was a bit hit and miss for a lot of people, but while flawed had its charm. However, as a Gothic fan I am very much looking forward to seeing more of this. What about you though? Let us know in the comments!
