Announced during San Diego Comic-Con as part of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 25th anniversary, Sonic Mania is coming to consoles and PC in 2017. Instead of trying for another 3D adventure however, Sonic Mania will mix it up with new and old zones.
Sonic Mania will allow you to play as any of the three characters – Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. The game is being developed in collaboration between SEGA, Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games. However, something doesn’t quit sit right for me with the visuals. I don’t know, it’s like I’m looking at Master System graphics instead of the more colourful Sonic 3 palette. Some of the new zones just look a bit drab.
Sonic Mania will add a new move for Sonic called the ‘Drop Dash’, which lets Sonic land from an aerial attack, right into a super spin. It’s also nice to see a nod to the Hornet car from Daytona USA in there, in the form of a van. Maybe we can expect other such easter eggs in other locations?
Sonic Mania is due for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2017. Perhaps it will appear on the new Nintendo platform too.
