New ‘Mirror’s Edge Catalyst’ Footage

2885761-me+catalyst_screen3EA DICE have just debuted two short teasers for one of 2016’s most anticipated games of the year, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. It’s been a long, eight-year wait for Catalyst, especially after the release date being pushed back.

Producer Sara Jansson elaborated that the game was delayed to “make sure that when you step into the massive City of Glass and experience the rise of Faith, it’s as entertaining, impressive, and memorable as it can be.”

And if the new footage is anything to go by, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will indeed be a worthy successor to everyone’s favorite parkour FPS (and our favorite final boss fight in gaming history).

The first video is titled ‘Movement’, and showcases some new features, such as the Shift move, which gives you a short burst of acceleration in any direction. And the Quickturn, which allows for a rapid 180 or 90 degree turn.

The second video is combat. This is the more interesting of the two really, because while the first Mirror’s Edge game did have combat, I would often find myself trying to avoid fighting where possible. The free-running aspect of the game was what player’s gravitated towards, and the combat seemed to break the fluidity of the movement.

Luckily, it seems like EA DICE have learned from their mistakes, and the new combat sequences come across as more swift and seamless.

The official website also describes new combat features, namely Flow and Focus.

“Build up and maintain Focus by maintaining movement and action. When Faith has Focus enemies can’t hit her, but losing Focus makes enemy attacks a greater threat to your health level. Once Faith focuses completely, she enters into Flow, a state of awareness that allows you to attack in new and more powerful ways.”

If you like what you see above, you may want to consider signing up for the beta for Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst!

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will be released on May 24th on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
