A new Nintendo console is eagerly anticipated and whilst we don’t know exactly what Nintendo has planned it’s pretty safe to say it’ll have us all talking and if all goes to plan we’ll surely be throwing our hard earned cash at them. So what can we look forward to and what’s worth keeping a watchful eye on? Well here’s my (Rob) forecast and opinion on what to expect.
Could 2016 be one of the best years yet for the gaming industry? Nintendo have some great looking titles on the horizon with one standing out more than the others whilst PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have more than their fair share of great looking games coming our way. The Legend of Zelda should finally find its way to our consoles this year. As Link, players can roam Hyrule Field on horseback or on foot before setting off on a trek to distant mountains if they prefer. Players can get to any area they can see from virtually any direction. I’m really excited for this one and its one of my most anticipated games for this year.
Star Fox Zero will be returning to a Nintendo console near you. I had a chance to get a look at this at EGX and I was pleasantly surprised. It looks like a heap of fun and the gamepad will work well with this. It’s good to see the series make a return, it’s been too long.
The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess gets released early this year. A visually-remastered remake of one of the most critically-acclaimed games in The Legend of Zelda series, it releases with its very own amiibo and is compatible with several other amiibos.
Battlefield 5. Nothing is known about this game except that DICE are now focused on a new release for 2016. Will it be Bad Company 3 or will it be this Armageddon title that’s been reported? Who knows but after how Battlefield 4 has turned out after a rocky start I’m super hyped to get back into battle and blow stuff up.
X-com 2 the turn based strategy game is pencilled in for a February release. The sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, XCOM 2 transports players 20 years into the future, where humanity lost the war against the aliens who are building new cities and promise a bright future whilst hiding more sinister goings on. The secret organization known as XCOM is mostly forgotten, and must strike back to reclaim control of Earth and free mankind from the aliens’ rule.
Plants Vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 is shaping up to be a certain hit. The first game was brilliant and the new game promises to be more bonkers and more chaotic than ever. Underneath the humour and gorgeous cartoony visuals is a shooter that’s sure to be great fun to play.
UNCHARTED 4: A Thief’s End takes players on a journey around the globe, through jungle isles, urban cities and snow-capped peaks as we continue to experience Drakes story. We were treated to a simply beautiful gameplay teaser at E3 and I for one can’t wait to play this game in 2016. Having not played an Uncharted game yet (I’ve just got the Uncharted collection) I’m looking forward to working my way through the series culminating in Naughty Dog’s newest story. I’ve heard a lot of good things and it’s bound to be an epic journey that won’t disappoint.
Hitman will be gracing us with an appearance early this year and so far I’m liking what I’m hearing. The latest in the series will see players perform contract hits on powerful, high-profile targets in exotic locations around the world, from Paris and the sunny coast of Italy to the markets in Marrakesh. Gameplay takes a big step away from the linear approach of the last game and focuses on taking out targets in huge and intricate sandbox levels with complete freedom of approach. Where to go, when to strike and who to kill – it’s up to you.
Crackdown is a sandbox full of mayhem and destruction. Become a Super-Powered Agent dedicated to Justice by any means necessary. Explore the heights of a dangerous futuristic city, cut through gang-infested streets in a transforming vehicle, and wield amazing abilities to dismantle a ruthless criminal empire. Crackdown will deliver cooperative chaos and an all-new multiplayer mode where destruction is your ultimate weapon against friends and rivals online. This will surely be one of the highlights of the year.
Re-Core is from the makers of Metroid Prime. Not a lot is known about this game but the teaser shown at E3 left me wanting more. This is certainly one to keep an eye on.
Sea of Thieves is another title that Microsoft showed off at E3 and it instantly appealed to me. Developed by RARE, the game features a beautiful art style and it looks like @jornny will be showering us with pirate puns when this walks the plank and falls into our shopping basket.
Horizon Zero Dawn is a PS4 exclusive from the people who brought us Killzone. Human’s evolution has regressed to hunters and technology has progressed to become powerful and has taken over. You play as Aloy, a skilled hunter who relies on speed, cunning and agility to stay alive and you must protect her tribe against the strength, size and raw power of the machines. You must embark on a journey to uncover the secrets of a forgotten civilisation, the ancient artefacts left behind, and learn more about the advanced technologies that will determine the fate of the planet.
No Man’s Sky is probably my most anticipated game of 2016. Ever since it was first shown off I’ve known it would be a day one purchase. We’ve seen a lot about this game and whilst I initially feared it may get over hyped, everything I’ve seen since has allayed my fears and I’m super excited about it. You command a ship and must (if you choose) make your way through the galaxy collecting resources so you can upgrade your ship to get to the centre of the galaxy. The more damage you do whilst getting resources the more likely the sentinels are to hunt you down and kill you. Once you discover a planet if you are the first you are able to name that planet and enter its atmosphere and explore the surface. There’s a lot of expectation surrounding this game, hopefully it lives up to it.
Those are my most anticipated titles of 2016 but other games I’m keeping my eye on are Ghost recon, the Division, Doom, Dishonoured 2, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Mafia 3, For Honor, Homefront, Ratchet & Clank and Scalebound. Let’s not also forget the annual sports titles and Call of duty titles that will inevitably release too. 2016 is going to be a busy and expensive year. What games are you most excited for?
