Is John Romero Making a New FPS!?!

john Romero GamesStrap on your seat-belts folks, because John Romero has a big announcement coming this Monday. And to answer the above question, yes, it does seem like Romero is working on a new First Person Shooter!

It’s been a long time since the DOOM and Quake co-creator has worked on a first person shooter. Last January John announced on facebook that he had developed a brand new DOOM level for the first time in 21 years. Fans were ecstatic, but they also wondered if Romero was flexing his old muscles as prep-work for a return to the genre.

In 2014 I had the pleasure of meeting John and his partner Brenda when they visited my college and gave us a series of guest lectures on the games industry and the game design process. When we asked John if he would ever make a new FPS, he said that he would like to, and had a couple of ideas in mind. Ever since then, I’ve been waiting for an official announcement. And by the sounds of things, one is coming sooner than you’d think.

A while back the Romeros moved to County Galway in the west of Ireland. They’ve since started a new company there, Romero Games Ltd. In a recent interview, John and Brenda spoke about the game design community in Ireland, and John mentioned that they would be starting production on a new game sometime soon.

We don’t know the concrete details yet, but we do know these things:

Firstly, the Romeros have uploaded a Force Awakens-esque trailer to YouTube, featuring Adrian Carmack, one of the four founders of id Software.

Secondly, John just posted this to his facebook page a few hours ago:

“The first NIGHT WORK GAMES (// newsletter is going out soon. Don’t miss the chance to get information before everyone else – sign up!”

And lastly, Brenda tweeted the following:

I’m excited! Are you excited? You should be excited! Let’s all be excited together!
