To commemorate the launch of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Dublin City Council did something unexpected with one of Ireland’s most iconic man made structures this week. Overlooking the capital city of Dublin, Ireland stands the 120 meter tall ‘Spire of Dublin’, or the Monument of Light. Built in 2002-2003, it seems that this structure now has a purpose; being a tribute to a Star Wars Lightsaber.
On the eve of the media showcase for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the Spire was lit up in blue, casting its light across the city, visible for miles. Fans attending the midnight opening on Wednesday night/early Thursday morning were greeted to this sight too, along with a platoon of the Emperor’s Stormtroopers, while the score of Star Wars played loud over the PA system.
To see our capital pay tribute to Star Wars in such a fashion is both a dream come true, and hard to believe in the first place. Star Wars is massive, no doubt; but to witness the city’s council as they pay homage to one of sci-fi’s most iconic movies is out of this world. No pun intended. Check out the images below, and may the Force be with you.
