Hitman has been revealed to be a fully episodic game now, following unclear messaging which just confused fans. After pre-orders were canceled on the publisher’s behalf, it is now confirmed that Hitman will release in parts, and that there’s also a collector’s edition, which comes with some interesting goodies.
The game will launch on March 11th, giving you access to the prologue mission and the first story mission. Then every month, a new episode will be released, along with monthly challenges, public events and extra content. An Italy mission will be released in April, followed by a Morocco mission in May. Other locations on the cards include Thailand, the United States, and Japan.
“We decided to take the full leap and publish Hitman as a truly episodic game experience,” Io boss Hannes Seifert said in a statement. “Part of that decision is for that little bit of extra time to ensure every location we release is at the quality level fitting for a Hitman game. But the main driving reason is that this will allow us to create a living game that will expand and evolve over time and establish a foundation for the future–this is the first game in a storyline which will continue and expand with future Hitman games.”
While it’s easy for us to be pessimistic and argue about how this release will differ from what has come so far in the series, let’s give IO Interactive a break. It’s their game, they’re sure to know what they’re doing, and while the wait between episodes may be timely for hardcore fans of the series, at least you know you’ll be playing the game throughout the whole year, eh?
The Collector’s Edition includes a digital download copy of the game (well, episode 1 and access to the rest when they release), as well as a 10” statue of Agent 47, an art book and a red tie and clip set, like what Agent 47 wears. You can see those below.
