In Take-Two’s recent financial results, the publisher revealed that GTA Online currently has 8 million players per week across all platforms. “By comparison EA revealed a stat recently that said Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline combined are currently on 6 million players per month,” says Metro.
GTA Online started out its life on Grand Theft Auto IV, allowing players to meet up in a freeroam version of Liberty City. It wasn’t until the release of GTA V however when Rockstar Games truly focused on the multiplayer portion of GTA, and despite its wonky launch two weeks after the game’s release, it has proven to be the most popular aspect of the game.
Fans have been crying out for more single player content, understandably. GTA IV saw two add-ons in the form of Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. Nothing has been confirmed or announced for GTA V, with Rockstar denying mentioning single player DLC earlier this year.
Rockstar however wish to focus on GTA Online, as seen with the regular free updates the mode has seen, with the most recent Lowriders and Halloween Events. Rockstar don’t want to outsource GTA Online work to other studios, in case it disrupts their vision, so the main studio focuses on all new content for the game.
“[…] we are constantly producing content for GTA Online alongside everything else we are working on,” Director of Design at Rockstar North Imran Sarwar told IGN back in September.
Take-Two have shipped 54 million copies of GTA V across Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down just yet. I imagine that when single player content eventually makes its way out, previous owners of the game on last gen will re-invest to check it out.
I personally can’t get enough of GTA Online, and while sometimes I take a few weeks break away from Los Santos, I miss it, I want to come back, and I do. There’s so much to enjoy, with all of the regular free updates, and more still to come. The ability to make your own jobs, and now make your own videos, as well as hang out with friends, do missions and heists together, or just go shopping!
Rockstar, keep it up!
