Last night during the Gears of War Live stream, Rod Fergusson, the head of The Coaltion announced that a Gears of War movie is still in discussion, after years of talk dating back to 2007. No firm details were given, other than a brief few sentences.
“When you’re doing a movie like this, you have to realise that it’s a different medium with a different audience. I think if you were to go in and say, ‘Okay, it’s got to be completely 100 per cent faithful to the game canon,’ or the story of the game, what’s going to end up happening is it’s not going to be the best movie. The big thing we’re really trying to focus on is making the best Gears movie possible, as opposed to the one that’s the most closest to the game.”
But who would you cast as the brutish Delta squad? Who has muscles bigger than their own heads? Gears of War’s cast of characters are like walking rocks, almost like The Rock himself actually. John DiMaggio, who has voiced the lead character Marcus Fenix throughout the trilogy would easily fit the part, especially in the voice department. Not sure how he’d fare with live action though.
It’s easy to imagine a bunch of WWE superstars fitting the role of the movie’s male and female cast, and hey, they’re all actors too who aren’t afraid to get bruised and beaten! But then you have the plot, and how to squeeze it all into a two-hour movie.
Karen Traviss wrote the books, as well as the story for Gears of War 3, and in the books, she had such attention to detail, she brought the world of Sera and the Gears to life. I’d sign her up for the movie in an instant.
It would have to be gritty, there’s no doubt about it. The game itself isn’t for kids, so the movie shouldn’t be either.
