Microsoft also announced alongside those impressive figures that Gears of War will now become one of the newest games in eSports, with 8 teams battling it out on Thursday the 19th at 5pm PDT in the Gears of War Pro League by ESL and presented by Xbox.
Co-Creator of Gears of War and Studio Head of The Coalition Rod Furgusson says: “It’s exciting to bring Gears of War back to eSports alongside our partners at ESL and Twitch for Ultimate Edition. It’s something that our fans have been requesting for a long time and we’re really pleased with how they’ve responded to the game’s eSports-friendly features, like LAN support, spectator mode and more match customization options.”
The tournament is made up of 8 North American teams, who are: Annex, EnVyUs, Enemy eSports, Murder by Numbers, Swarm Gaming, Synergy, Tragedy, and VexX Gaming. You can watch the tournament on the official Gears of War Twitch Channel.
Compared to other eSports Leagues, the purse is rather small at $50,000, but it has to start somewhere and the community can now help fund even bigger tournaments in the future. A brand new skin dubbed the “Sweaty” weapon skin is available from today for $4.99. While that may be expensive for a skin, the money will be used to directly fund future tournaments and have bigger prizes.
