Forza Horizon series developer, Playground Games have told GamesIndustry.biz that they were opening a new studio in the local town of Leamington Spa, to create a brand new, non-racing, open-world title. It’s unknown what platform said title will be created for, but with the studio yet to be set up, it’s still some time off.
Founder and creative director of Playground Games, Ralph Futton said “It’s a great opportunity for us to test ourselves in a different genre. Opening another studio is something we’ve been talking about for a good few years, but we’ve been keen not to rush into it.”
“We feel like we’ve become pretty good at racing games over the years. We can always get better, we can always strive to get better but we’d love to prove ourselves in a different genre. That’s another goal of Project 2, to allow us to do that. We’re going to need to hire some very talented people with experience that we don’t have.”
The studio are still looking at a suitable location but aside from that, I’m very curious to know what kind of title they have up their sleeve. If it’s not entirely racing related, could it still involve cars in some sense? Would you consider Driver a racing game, or a car game? Who knows what we should expect. However, Ralph feels that some new talent will need to be drafted in, so the potential for something car-free is also on the horizon. Pun intended.
“We have a great studio here, with a really broadly experienced staff, some of whom joined us five, six years ago as graduates. For some of them, this was their first job in the industry. I remember many of them starting green as you like. They’ve grown up in this studio, grown in experience over three games of increasing quality, and are now in a position where they are looking to develop their careers. We want them to do that here rather than somewhere else, but with only one team the opportunities for that are limited.”
Since being founded in 2010, Playground Games released Forza Horizon in 2012, Horizon 2 in 2014, and Forza Horizon 3 in late 2016, which won awards for its gorgeous visuals and gameplay.
