The holidays are ruined! Well, according to some responses from isolated groups of individuals upon hearing that a character from a video game they like is actually a member of the LGBT community, it is. “I can never use that character again,” or “I’ll never play this game again now,” are probably comments being made elsewhere.
In case you haven’t heard yet, Blizzard revealed via the latest Overwatch comic series that British character Tracer is in fact gay. Or a lesbian, to be specific. Tracer has a lot of history and is seen as a key figure in the promotional material of Overwatch. She first appeared in Heroes of the Storm in April of this year, and was the subject of a lot of controversy surrounding her arse and a victory pose. She was also involved (unknowingly) in fan-made porn which Blizzard did their best to shut down.
The latest comic reveals that Tracer has a girlfriend, and there’s a picture of the two characters kissing upon giving and receiving a gift for Christmas. “From the very beginning of our work on Tracer’s story, it just felt right to make this an aspect of her character,” Blizzard said in a statement to Kotaku.
I certainly won’t be losing sleep over the reveal, or the breaking news, and as someone who is still sitting on the sidelines, yet to even play Overwatch, it doesn’t diminish my enthusiasm to try it, or encourage it. She’s only a character, but she’s also an icon; who will one day be remembered in a very Lara Croft way to female gamers. Girl power and all that jazz. Meanwhile, people are still playing Overwatch and it’s considered 2016’s Game of the Year to many!
