Fallout 4’s release deals a blow to Pornhub traffic numbers

Pornhub traffic took a dive (in to an extremely cold body of water) as it shrivelled by 10% on Fallout release day. That’s a lot of people foregoing their usual viewing schedule in favour of a long awaited trip back to the wasteland.

It’s been six years since Fallout: New Vegas and there have been a lot of people eagerly awaiting the next installment of the post apocalyptic, action rpg. As expected, sales of the game broke records with 12 million copies being sold on the first day and are said to be in excess of $750 million. PornHub were well aware of the game’s upcoming release as some of the leaked gameplay that emerged in the months before were given a home on the site. Pornhub’s data analysts now believe some drops in numbers of visits to the site can be attributed to release day of Fallout 4.

“Like watching a good Pornhub video, anticipation of the release had been building up, and once the moment arrived, dedicated gamers thought of little else – including visiting Pornhub,” the company wrote.

According to data shared with VentureBeat, traffic dropped to 10 percent lower than normal on launch day, 10th of November at 5 a.m and remained below average until 3 p.m. Numbers then rose back to normal, healthy levels and powered on like that until 6 p.m. Traffic strengthened again at 11 p.m.

“Compared to an average day, we saw a slight 5% increase in traffic among gamers in the early morning hours from 3-4 am. At this point we assume everyone’s download completed and the gaming commenced. Starting at 5am traffic began to drop, down as much as 10% from 7am till noon. In the afternoon traffic returned to normal, but after 6pm it dropped again when we assume that 9-5 workers arrived home and fired up their games. After midnight it seems like everyone finally took a break, and traffic jumped as high at 15% above daily norms.”

Some more in depth analysis of the fluctuations was shown, with sports game fans showing the biggest change in behaviour. FIFA clearly wasn’t fulfilling all of their needs before Fallout 4 came on the scene.

“Focusing on a few specific genres, we can see some interesting changes in the hourly graphs. Although shooter fans had the lowest overall change, they did have the highest increase in traffic before (+12%) and after (+25%) the Fallout 4 release. Action Fans and Adventure and Strategy fans followed each other closely throughout the entire day.”

Gamers are seemingly finding it hard to pull themselves away from Fallout 4, but are still finding the time to give themselves some love. Pornhub don’t seem too worried about the flop in numbers even though a 10% drop equates to a very large amount of visits.

“As huge fans of the game, we can’t say we blame anyone for swapping Pornhub time for some Pip-Boy surfing instead,” Pornhub VP Corey Price told GamesBeat. “We would have done the same.”
