Yesterday, Polygon put together a short video comparing the voice over work of both Peter Dinklage and Nolan North, the old and new voice actors for Destiny’s Ghost character. See the differences below.
While my initial reaction has been in favour of Peter Dinklage, not because I’m a Game of Thrones or Pixels fan (I’m neither), I think it has more to do with first impression. For the length of time I have played Destiny, I have always known of Peter Dinklage’s voice. To have it change so dramatically, albeit with the same lines, Nolan North’s voice just seems alien to me. Certainly younger, more naive in sound.
While we know that Dinklage was replaced due to uncontroversial reasons, Nolan North is certainly more adept at voicing game characters, with his extensive background in voicing Nathan Drake, Penguin in Batman Arkham, Lunarfall Footman in World of Warcraft and Desmond Miles in Assassin’s Creed, to name a few.
Existing fans will struggle at first, but will adapt in time. Newer fans won’t know the difference, and with Destiny still selling extremely well, Dinklage will only become a thing of the past as Destiny continues on its ten year course.
And who couldn’t love a face like this?
