Supermassive Games, the developers behind last year BAFTA winning PS4 exclusive Until Dawn, have announced that they will no longer develop games exclusively for Playstation systems, and will move on to be a multiplatform developer.
Supermassive has a big history with Sony, for the most part they were in charge of small projects like LittleBigPlanet DLC or the Killzone HD remaster for the Playstation 3. In 2015, they got their chance to shine with their new IP, a horror game known as Until Dawn released exclusively for the Playstation 4. The game was a big success, with it’s sales surpassing expectations and even earning the studio a BAFTA.
From an interview with MCV:
“We’ve worked closely with Sony for as long as the studio has been around, so the past eight years, I’ve loved it, they are great to work with and we have a strong relationship with them. I think a lot of the work we do with them aligns well with what we want to do and where we want to go. But yes, we are an independent studio and we are keen, going forward, to bring our games to wider audiences than we have in the past. That’s what we are all about right now, and it’s an exciting time for us.”
While an Xbox One or PC port of Until Dawn is more than unlikely, maybe we will see another new IP with a similar style. Supermassive is currently working on two Playstation VR exclusives: Until Dawn: Rush of Blood and Tumble VR.
