Pokemon turns 20 this year, and The Pokemon Company have released this new Super Bowl commercial to help celebrate it. “You can do it”, “I can do it” and other similar sentences of motivation can be heard throughout, and over the last 20 years, many of us did it and are still doing it today.
The commercial features some awesome references that eagle-eyed fans have spotted, such as the chess pieces, the ’19’ and ’96’ on the back of the American football jerseys, and the motto they slap as they exit the dressing room.
In February 1996, Pokemon Red and Blue (Red and Green in Japan) first appeared on the GameBoy, and ever since, it has taken the world by storm. While many will remember the games, many will also remember the tv show and how it brought our favourite Pokemon to life. Pokemon taught us friendship, competition, and trained us to outwit our opponents.
Pokemon has stayed faithful to Nintendo platforms however, and while fans dream of exploring open worlds in 3D like a modern RPG, it doesn’t look like it will happen anytime soon. Next on the list is Pokemon Go, which can be played anywhere in the world, seeing fans travel around their local areas to search for those famous pocket monsters to fight and collect.
Whether it was for two months, two years, or all 20 of them since they first showed up, we wanted to be the very best, like no-one ever was. Whether it’s the games, re-runs of the tv show or movies, or the collectible cards, Pokemon will be around for a long long time, entertaining kids and adults of all ages.
Gotta catch ’em all!
