Long before the World of Warcraft was introduced to the gaming public, Warcraft existed as a humble real-time strategy game long term fans will remember and love. But when Blizzard decided to turn that universe into one of the worlds most successful MMORPG titles, the idea of it being a RTS game somewhat faded into the history books. Nowadays, it only exists in the collection of long-term dedicates and fans of retro games. But during a recent interview with IGN at Gamescom, Blizzard revealed that the concept isn’t quite dead yet.
Since such a time, StarCraft 2 has become Blizzard’s go to RTS game having released on July 27th 2010. And we all know that Blizzard take pride in supporting their IP’s over the course of many years, so it’s only natural that 5 years on the story is due to conclude with the launch of StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void (due for release later this year). That of course opens up potential for Blizzard to once again expand their universe with the announcement of a new game, this won’t be anytime in the near future of course, but that hasn’t stopped them thinking about what they could bring to their community.
Legacy of the Void producer Tim Morten: “It’s very rewarding for us to hear that there’s demand out there for more RTS content in the Warcraft universe so once we’re done with Void I think we’ll get together as a team and talk about what would inspire us to work on next. There’s no question, though, that we’ll consider Warcraft, StarCraft, or even new ideas. Anything is possible.”
While Blizzard currently have plenty to keep them busy for the time being, Legacy of the Void, new Heroes of the Storm content, new Hearthstone content and the recently announced World of Warcraft expansion it’s good to see that they’re considering all of their options when it comes to the future. A new Warcraft RTS game is definitely well overdue (given Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne launched over 12 years ago). As has become the norm with this kind of post, we’d like to see the opinions of you, the 4-One Gaming community. What Blizzard IP would you like to see get a sequel? Or would you prefer to see a new IP? Be sure to let us know in the comment section below!
