Blizzard hit by DDoS, Lizard Squad claim responsibility

battle.net lizard squad ddosBlizzard game players may have struggled to connect to their games last night in what has been said to have been a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. Games such as World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 and Hearthstone were affected, while the infamous Lizard Squad claimed responsibility.

The attack took place over night while most of Europe was sleeping, but residents in the US and night owls over here may have been hit by the brunt force attack. Blizzard have since rectified the situation, but what’s to say it won’t happen again, and spoil a night of good fun amongst friends?

Lizard Squad still seem to be doing the rounds unfortunately, after figures involved in the group have been found out or arrested since. These DDoS attacks are not even considered hacking attempts, more like shoving more data onto a server than it can manage, causing it to collapse temporarily.

It’s odd that Lizard Squad chose to attack Blizzard and Battle.net, unless it relates to the news of how Blizzard are taking action against those who are hosting their own vanilla World of Warcraft server, which they’re not so happy with. Lizard Squad claim there is ‘more to come’, so expect more nights of hassle on any or all gaming platforms in the near future if they decide to keep their word. If it was them at all.
