Treyarch plan to bring modding back to the COD scene allowing the community to bring mods and new maps to Black Ops III in the future.
While the feature won’t be available straight away. with Treyarch saying that the feature won’t arrive until 2016, but it will definitely interest many PC gamers. This will be the first Call of Duty since COD 4 to get official modding tools.

“Over the years, the Call of Duty® community has proven itself to be among the most passionate in the world – and we count ourselves fortunate to make games for you,” said Director of Development Cesar Stastny on the Treyarch Blog. “We’ve been listening to one of your top requests and are excited to announce that modding and mapping are coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 PC!”
There’s still a lot to be done, but here’s the plans they currently have in place:
- You will be able to create Maps & Game Modes and more!
- We will include Unranked Dedicated Server Files with the tools so you can run servers with modded content anywhere you choose.
- We will provide an Unranked Server Browser so you can easily find and join servers with modded content.
- Closed Alpha target date: March 2016
While unconfirmed, I wouldn’t be surprised to see community created maps and modes make their way onto consoles too, and no doubt will help fuel the DLC train as community mods may require specific content.
With the plan still being some time away, Treyarch aren’t making any promises as some planned features may change or get dropped off. More features may also be added as they realize what they can and cannot do while developing the tools.
