There’s only two episodes left before the end of Dontnod’s first episodic game series, Life is Strange, and having proven to be quite the success it’s no surprise that people are starting to ask about the potential for a second season. Speaking with Polygon at E3, Luc Baghadoust and Michael Koch certainly seemed interested in continuing albeit with an entirely new cast of characters.
Baghadoust said that “We would love to have the opportunity to do another season. We’re working so hard to finish Episodes 4 and 5. It’s a lot of work. It’s a lot of stress. We have a limit of time to put out each episode. We want to stick to the eight week release between each episode as much as we can.” He also happened to mention that the season is narratively complete meaning that by the end of Episode 5 Max and Chloe’s story will have come to its conclusion, hopefully without too many loose ends. This does however complicate matters if you’re looking for a second outing.
It was the co-director of the game, Michael Koch, who was toying with the idea of a new cast and new location for any possible continuation comparing it to popular TV shows like American Horror Story and True Detectives which feature a new cast and new story with each season while still remaining true to the basic themes of the original. “We can really go with other characters, other locations, but still keep the identity of the game, the themes of the game,” he said.
Koch also addressed some of the complaints that they had received regarding the game admitting that they could have done a better job on lip-syncing but also arguing that their use of slang phrases helped players to feel a connection with the characters. He argued that “You need some time to create worlds and ways of speaking to a character that will grow with you, but, starting with Episode 2, we’ve seen [people] saying that they love Chloe for saying ‘hella’ because it feels that they knew the character. They knew she would say that. When you are writing characters, you need sometimes to create expressions for them, if you want them to be different and relatable.”
Episode 3 released on May 19th so we should be seeing Episode 4 arriving next month. Episodic games can be very difficult to pull off but so far Dontnod have been doing a fantastic job and it will be interesting to see whether we see more of it in the future.
