80s cop show Chips rebooted for big screen

chipsThe trend of the 80s reboots continue, with the first showing of the reboot for Chips appears on Jimmy Kimmel Live. I wasn’t even aware of this happening, and I regret knowing about it even now. While I was young when Chips was in its prime, I recall the intro more than anything else, but this just looks…gah, I dunno.

Replacing Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada are Dax Shepard, Michael Peña, and it seems to focus a lot on homophobia and ‘being cool with male bonding’. The two California Highway Patrol officers, who are rather ‘Dumb & Dumber-ish’ are tasked with going undercover to take down a California crime ring. Bike chases are involved, locker room scenes are involved, and there’s some gun fights and explosions too. Cringe worth sense of humour highly likely.

It’s all very ’21 Jump Street’, which seems to be the craze these days, and while Baywatch is also getting the reboot, starring The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, Chips just looks a bit too silly for its own good. For reference, watch the original opening for the tv show below. Grand Theft Auto V made a reference to the show during one of its missions, which saw Michael don the uniform and patrol the highways of Los Santos.

Let us know what you think, are you sighing loudly, or are you intrigued? ChiPs is due for release on March 24th.
