4-One Gaming Etiquette guide for online gaming

Online gamingHello people, I decided to make this post after hundreds of hours spent in several online games: Dota 2, League of Legends, Counter-Strike, WoW, etc.

This is meant to be shared to anyone you think could have a few tips, not for scoring amazing kills, but for behaving properly in an online game, not being a ****, and being someone you would play with again. So let’s get straight to the point.

1. THE REPORT BUTTON IS FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE BEHAVING BADLY, NOT FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE PLAYING BADLY

Yes, I have to use caps, because this is something that truly pisses me off, mostly seen in MOBAs such as League of Legends or Dota 2, the report system in those games is designed against people who like to insult other players, spam the chat, or be a jerk in general. However, there are people who ask for everyone to report a certain player because he’s not doing very well, you can’t report a player because of bad performance, else every newbie in those games would get banned after a few matches, do not, I repeat, DO NOT do that, please. Sure, you can report if they’re playing badly intentionally (Feeding in purpose for example), but make sure he’s actually meaning to do it.

One of the things I wish Valve did with Dota 2 was add a report button for people who want to abuse the report system.

2. Make sure you’re not going to be busy for the next 2 hours

Don’t go into that Ranked match or raid and then leave halfway through because you need to go somewhere, of course sometimes surprises come up and can’t be helped, but don’t play 2 hours before having to go to school or work, It’s bad both for the team (Since they have one less player to help) and for you (Since many games nowadays have systems that punish people who quit a match).

3. Do not get angry or sad when someone doesn’t like the way you play

There’s a difference between asking to report someone who’s not doing well, and someone who’s legitimately trying to help and tells you about any mistakes you made or gives you a few tips, do not be afraid to accept the advice of that stranger on your team who is most likely more experienced at the game than you. Of course also…

4. Make sure to give constructive criticism

It’s completely fine to tell someone that they should pay more attention to the game, or that they could use a better item build, but don’t insult them or scream at them, I’ve played with people who love to scream at the mic  when the team is not at x position, try to stay calm at least.

5. Don’t like someone? Press the mute button

If someone is spamming the chat, screaming or not saying anything relevant other than words from a cuss words dictionary, just report them for bad conduct and press the “Mute” button, most online games have this feature, and there will be at least an occasion where you will thank the devs for adding said feature.

6. Have a thick skin

Unfortunately, many people in online games tend to act in such a…Unpleasant manner, even if buttons like “Report” and “Mute” exist, I strongly recommend ignoring all the bad comments these people say, don’t let it make you feel down 🙂

7. Act and play like someone other people would play with again

You don’t have to be a full MLG Pro, but you can be a decent and friendly player that someone would add to their friend list, thus getting you and him a new teammate.

Yeah, some tips off my head, I hope they’re useful, if you can think of another tip for online gaming etiquette, share them in the comments section!
